A bunch of sickos!

Everyone in the family has been sick for most of January. Dad had to be hospitalized for two days! He had the flu and pneumonia. He's home now and doing much better. I didn't have the flu, but my cold was bad enough to make me miserable!

At least I had Courtney and Mr. Spock bear to keep me company!

We had our first real snow in early January. I took Corinne and Gwynn out in it. It was a lot of snow, but it didn't last long.

I finished two cross stitch pieces. One is a Christmas piece. I actually have to redo part of it (misspelled word), so no photo. The second is a Barbie themed piece from Prudence Kitsch, a favorite Etsy designer.

Mom did a lot of quilting. She finished this beautiful quilt:

Finally, my first ever customized AG! They had a limited edition Barbie, but it was $300, not available until November, and sold out anyway! So i made my own. I used Isobel. I gave her a wig and swimsuit from an Etsy seller, and painted her nails red. The final touches were sunglasses and sandals (borrowed from Julie). I think she turned out okay!

The Oktoberfest craft committee has its first meeting in late February. I'll probably make more cards, but I want to make some other things this year.

I love them all!

AG released new Disney Princesses today and they are wonderful. The first three are Ariel, Tiana, and Cinderella. Each doll has two outfits available separately. Elsa and Anna from Frozen are coming at Christmas!

I'm going to get Cinderella (her outfits can wait) and Claudie's work outfit now, and Ariel and her bundle for my birthday.

Well done, AG. Good price point, too. This should give the company a much needed boost.

Valentine's Day week.

Valentine's Day was on Ash Wednesday this year, so we didn't do anything special as a family. The usual cards and candy, flowers for Mom, and dinner after the Ash Wednesday service. I did some decorating, of course. Mardi Gras, too.

We went to see Jersey Boys at the Riverside. It was one of the best shows they've ever done.

I'm going back to the surgery center tomorrow. The pain around where the gallbladder was is getting worse. I hope I don't have loose gallstones, a hernia, or a bile leak. That's the worst case scenario, and it could put me in the hospital for a week or more. But I'm not worried about that. It's very unlikely. I probably just have a seroma or other fluid build-up.

I was planning to order Cinderella, but she's backordered. Boo!

Now what?

Dad had to call an ambulance for Mom tonight. She thought she was having a heart attack. She's at the hospital now, and they're keeping her overnight for observation. They'll do tests tomorrow, and hopefully, she'll be able to come home. She's already feeling better. Doesn't seem to be a heart attack.

Meanwhile, I had my appointment at the surgery center. The doctor agreed with me that the lumps were weird, and he ordered a CT scan. I really hope it's something easily fixed.

Now what?, continued.

Mom had a heart catheterization procedure today. They found some blockage, so they put three stents in an artery to open them up. She was a bit loopy and in pain when she was brought back to her room, but by dinner time, she was feeling much better. She'll go home sometime tomorrow.

Katie and I got her a cute flower arrangement:

This was my view most of yesterday and today:

The past two days have been exhausting and worrying. I'm just glad that Mom didn't have a heart attack, and that she should be fine in a few days.

Meanwhile, I'm dreading my CT scan on Thursday. I've been having a lot of pain, and I'm worried about what they'll find. I hope to hell that I don't need more surgery.

Mom's home!

She was released after lunchtime. She's very tired, but feels fine and is happy to be home. She even feels well enough to go to her Rotary Club's dinner meeting tomorrow night. I have to dog sit for Katie this weekend, but until then I'll help Mom as much as she needs. Rory was very happy to see her.

The stress, worrying, and running around over the weekend caught up with me.
I just collapsed into bed and slept nine straight hours. I guess knowing that Mom was going to be okay let me relax a bit.

Now I'm keeping my fingers crossed that my scan will be clear.

Now what? Part three: Aw hell no.

My scan was early Thursday morning. It turns out it was supposed to be 8:20 p.m. instead (oops), but they were able to squeeze me in almost right away. It was a quick scan with no contrast dye. I got the preliminary results a few hours later. No surprise, I do have a hernia. It's a spigelian hernia, and they can be hard to treat. I'm having a lot of pain and discomfort, but I have to wait for the doctor to study the scans and decide what to do next. I will probably need surgery, and it is going to suck. Spigelian hernias almost always have to be repaired with open surgery. Laparoscopic can be done, but the results are less satisfactory. So if I have to have surgery, I have another five days in the hospital to look forward to. So much for planning to join Mom and Dad on their Kentucky trip.

To cheer myself up, I bought a new American Girl outfit. Ezri models it here:

Some of the first daffodils of the year:

Spring is coming!

I'm dog sitting Maisie. I'm bored because my dumb ass left my cross stitch chart at home. I was ready to do a lot of work tonight. I brought everything but the chart.

Aw, hell.

My appointment reminder has been changed from follow-up to pre-op. In other words, I will be having surgery. Again. Dammit. I hope it's soon, and that I won't have to stay in the hospital too long this time. I'll find out on Tuesday. The surgeon didn't ask me to come in immediately, so it might not be too bad.

Here we go again...

Yes, I have to have hernia repair surgery again. At least this time, it will be outpatient, unless the surgeon has to switch from laparoscopic to open surgery. He says that it's a possibility because of my scar tissue and surgical history, but he's sure that won't happen. So I probably will go home the same day!

So I don't get to go to Kentucky after all. Mom and Dad are giving me a consolation prize- the money to buy one of the AG Disney Princess dolls. I'm going to order Cinderella, but I'll probably get either Ariel or Tiana at the Tyson's Corner store.

Meanwhile, Tuesday was the sixth anniversary of my hysterectomy and cancer diagnosis. Six years, and still cancer free!

Shenanigans.

Well, not really. St. Patrick's Day dinner was a couple of days early, and it was good. Dad made corned beef hash with our leftovers, and they were even better. I set up a cute doll display. Other than that, not much else happened.

Two trees this year! I keep finding new decorations.

March Madness has begun, and Colorado State is in it! They beat the hell out of the Virginia Cavaliers tonight in the "First Four"(teams that just missed being picked). With that win, they're in the tournament. Let's go, Rams!

Spring is here, and Easter is a week and a half away. I bought one of the huge plush Peeps bunnies. It's three feet tall!

It's mostly been warm out. The daffodils have taken over the garden.

There was also some excitement the other night. Actually, it was terrifying. I saw a possibly rabid, definitely sick raccoon in the driveway. It stared at me and was acting drunk. Animal Control had to be called. They couldn't find it, but said other neighbors had seen it and were concerned. We just need to be careful, especially at night. I hope it's caught before a kid or pet gets hurt. This is why Rory is an indoor only cat!

Buddy the Elf wouldn't want a hug from this raccoon, that's for sure!

Ugh.

Anthem won't cover my upcoming hernia repair surgery. They claim it's not "medically necessary." The hell it isn't. My appeal is already in motion. The surgeon and hospital billing office are working on it. Also, the letter I got today said the surgeon mentioned "full hospitalization," meaning that he now expects there to be complications, and it won't be outpatient after all. My surgery is three weeks from today. I hope the appeal works. Fuck the American health care system. 😢

And Colorado State lost to Texas in the first round of the NCAA tournament. Oh, well. Thanks for a great season, Rams! 🐏

Six months!

This Saturday, it will be six months since my gallbladder was yeeted. My scar still looks gross. I still have weird "phantom" pains, plus the surrounding tissue is hard. And then I have that hernia that I'm getting repaired in ten days. I have to say, I had a much tougher recovery than I did from my hysterectomy six years ago. My digestive system has fully recovered, at least. And just like I did with my last surgery, I still have nightmares.

Mom and Dad have canceled the Kentucky trip, partly because Mom is still tired from her hospital stay, plus she's had a foot injury that makes walking difficult. She also doesn't want to be away from me after my surgery, even though it would have been two weeks after. We're going to Virginia Beach instead after Katie gets back from her Greece and Turkey cruise. Then we're going to a different quilt show near Philadelphia in September. I still hope we can go to New York. And Mom and I were looking at cruises for 2025. She's wanted to take me on one for years, but Katie and I both having cancer derailed that. A cruise would be fun, but I'd almost rather go back to Disney World. Mom and Dad's Hilton timeshare has one of their hotels in Orlando.

I'm not ready for Easter. It's so early this year. I haven't decorated yet. I'm scrambling to plan a menu for dinner, as well as treats for coffee hour at church. I want my mom to do as little as possible. The only thing I have planned for sure is my spanakopita plus a coconut cake. Our little choir will be ready, but we're going to be missing our really good tenor.

Yay!

The surgery center called. Anthem is going to cover me for outpatient surgery, and will work something out if it turns into an overnight. I think there was a coding error. Anthem probably thought my surgeon was planning to keep me for several days. Nope, only if there are big complications. I was told to prepare for either going home that night or staying 1-2 nights.

Meanwhile, Katie had a big surprise for me. As a pre-surgery present, she's taking me to the Nationals home opener on Monday! I haven't been to Nats Park since before the pandemic.

Another family Easter celebration.

Six of us this year at Katie's house for dinner after church. It's always nice to see Katie's in-laws! Just Maryellen and Richard this year. No Sam and Devon because Sam couldn't get off work.

The small but mighty choir and bells did really well. I know that Padre Lee was happy with us.

I baked two cakes for the Easter brunch after church. They were more than half gone by the end of the day. I also made spanakopita like I do every year, and everyone loved them.

Some photos- the altar, my cakes, the dinner table, my doll displays, flowers for Mom, and myself, decked out in Peeps!

It was a really nice day. Good weather and good company. Everyone was exhausted after dinner!

I stayed over at Katie's because we went to the Nats game the next day.

Sam just got a new job! He's going to work for ABC- the national network, not the New York affiliate. He's really moving up in the journalism industry.

Play ball!

Home opener for the Nationals! It was a chilly day, and the Nats lost to the Pirates, but Katie and I had fun. I love Nats Park. We had great seats near first base. There was a Hard Times Cafe stand near our section, so we had chili dogs and nachos for dinner.

Of course I took a doll with me. Ezri fit easily in my clear bag.

The D.C. cherry blossoms are still around.

The opening day giveaway was cute bucket hats!

Opening lineup, It starts here, Screech with some drummers, fireworks, and Ezri with my souvenirs!

It was so much fun, but we were both so tired when we got back. I went to bed at 10:30 and slept almost until nine. Poor Maisie missed us all day!

I needed a fun day out. I'm going to be stuck at home for at least a week after my surgery. Katie had a good idea with the tickets.

My surgery is a week away. I had to stop taking ibuprofen yesterday. I hope I don't have any migraines this week, because Tylenol does nothing for them. I'm starting to feel a bit nervous about the surgery, even though I know it should be fine.

Wakey wakey New Jersey quakey!

A 4.8 earthquake shook the Tri-state area this morning. Sam and Devon live in Brooklyn. They definitely felt the quake. Californians can laugh at us East Coast folks all they want about our reactions, but we do feel quakes more and in a wider area. The 5.8 central Virginia quake in 2011 was felt in Boston and Charleston, South Carolina. The quakes tend to be very shallow, so anything stronger than a 3 is going to get our attention. Sam spent the day covering the news (still at Spectrum, he starts at ABC soon). Devon and her students had to get under their desks! No damage or injuries reported in the area, but there were a lot of rattled nerves. And the poor pets! I bet Astro and Truman were upset (no idea how their bunnies would react to earthquakes)! I remember how kitten Rory hid for almost two days after the Virginia quake. Astro is still a puppy. A very big baby. I bet he was super clingy when Sam and Devon got home!

The quake produced some hilarious Tweets and memes.

This day won't be forgotten anytime soon. And there's going to be a solar eclipse on the 8th- it will be total in many areas including New York!

Great American Solar Eclipse!

Solar eclipse day! The weather cooperated, so the eclipse was actually visible in our area. We weren't in an area with totality, but about 87% of the sun was covered. It definitely got a bit darker and cooler for a few minutes!

My photos suck. I took them through a filter, but they really don't show how much coverage there was.

This beautiful photo of the eclipse over the Washington Monument came from the Associated Press.

My family had a little viewing party!

The dolls had to get into the action, too. I found a template to make little solar glasses. They turned out so cute!

That was fun. The next total solar eclipse in North America will be in 2044, and only visible in Montana and the Dakotas.

I'm glad I had that little distraction. This
morning I did my pre-op interview, so I'm ready to check in on Thursday morning. I've packed an overnight bag with extra underwear, socks, my charger, and of course, Ezri in the health care worker outfit! Also packed my headphones. If I'm stuck at the hospital overnight, I can at least watch the new episode of Star Trek Discovery (if I'm feeling up to it).

A four day weekend.

And not the good kind. I went in on Thursday morning for my hernia repair. I was out like a light before I even got to the operating room.
The next thing I remembered was the surgery nurse telling me "You're staying overnight." One night turned into three. They let me go home Sunday afternoon. The reason for the long stay: the hernia had doubled in size. It was the size of a salad plate. No wonder the surgery took longer than expected. I was kept as long as I was for pain management and observation. The pain has been pretty bad. At least the scars will be smaller this time. No problems with laparoscopic surgery. I was also allowed to eat a normal diet, though I was never hungry.

Checking in, with "Nurse" Ezri. Flowers from the family.

First meal- melted vanilla ice cream. That sucked. First actual dinner was the next night- a cheese pizza that was actually good.

There was some miscommunication about where I was being taken to after surgery, so I woke up alone. That really sucked. Not my family's fault. I'm glad they were there some of the time, even though I was asleep most of the first two days. Despite the pain, I was able to walk down the long hallway the night of the surgery.

I could have gone home Saturday night, but I was really in too much pain. They wanted to make sure I was eating and walking.

So I'm home, still in awful pain, not much of an appetite, and very tired. But I make myself walk a few minutes every time I'm awake. Hopefully, I'll bounce back before my follow-up with the surgeon in two weeks.

The cat was happy to see me.

Pretty flowers!

I got a card and Sunday's altar flowers from church. And the garden at home is blooming, too. The daffodils are done, but the azaleas are popping up everywhere. The irises are almost ready to open, and the wisterias and lilacs are nearly ready, too! I love spring.

All of my get well flowers, some azaleas with a very happy butterfly!

Last day at the hospital- I was showered and anxious to get home. And Ezri claimed my post surgery pillow.

I have been home for three days. I still have a lot of pain, but it's not constant anymore.

Sad anniversaries.

April 19th is the 29th anniversary of the Oklahoma City bombing. It's also the 31st anniversary of the Waco siege that led to the bombing.

Tomorrow is the 25th anniversary of the Columbine High School massacre. I can't believe it's been that long. Those kids would have kids in high school or college by now. Some might have even become young grandparents. It's not just the length of time that I find unbelievable. It's the fact that Columbine isn't even in the top ten modern mass shootings in the U.S. anymore! It's been almost forgotten in a way, as there have been so many mass shootings with high death counts in 25 years. Las Vegas, The Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Sutherland Springs church, Sandy Hook, Uvalde, El Paso, Parkland, and of course, Virginia Tech,
which had its 17th anniversary last week. We've learned nothing. And nothing has changed.

Just having a bit of post surgery insomnia. The pain is a bit better. My appetite is coming back, and I was more active today. I really should be feeling better in another week.

Healing.

I laid down on my bed after dinner last night, thinking I'd rest for half an hour...and woke up at 1 a.m. And I was hungry! Every second of rest and every bite of food goes to healing. I think I'm recovering a bit faster than I did from the gallbladder and previous hernia surgeries. Still have some pain, though.

Meanwhile, I've ordered the Ariel bundle from AG. She won't get here until late June/early July, but AG has a 3x points bonus this weekend. I had almost enough with gift cards from Christmas and Valentine's Day, plus dog sitting money in PayPal. This is my get well present to myself! I ordered Claudie's pajamas, too, to get a few more points.

I couldn't go to church today. I was exhausted after taking a shower. My appetite is pretty much back. I had a good lunch with enough left over for dinner. I actually helped Mom with dinner last night. She bought hamburger sliders and sweet Hawaiian rolls, so we made Red Robin style teriyaki pineapple burgers! They were good. I can't do a lot, but it feels good to do something.

The sliders:

I have a regular appointment with my PA tomorrow for med refills. I'll have her look at my incisions to see if they're okay. My surgery follow-up is next week. No stitches or staples to take out this time- they used surgical glue. I've had no problems, but as I heal, there's a lot of itching!

Home for a week.

Actually, it's been ten days. I'm definitely improving. I have one spot that hurts whenever I stand. It's annoying more than anything. The skin stings a bit when I take a shower. But I'm much better. I'm wearing a binder at night, and it helps a lot. My appointment with the PA went well. She said my blood pressure was a bit elevated, but that it was probably related to the stress from surgery.

This sweet boy is now thirteen years old. I got Rory at fourteen weeks old, so he was most likely born in mid to late April. I hope I get a few more years with my good boy.

More irises in the garden.

Trying to walk more to enjoy the garden and nice weather. Every bit of activity helps me heal.
