John Barrowman singing Being Alive from Company (Kennedy Center 2002). HOW DID I MISS THIS I COULD HAVE SEEN HIM I COULD HAVE GOTTEN TICKETS!
Quite possibly one of my favorite Broadway songs- definitely my favorite written by Stephen Sondheim. (Number 2 is Not While I'm Around from Sweeney Todd, number 3 is Send in the Clowns from A Little Night Music, number 4 is On the Steps of the Palace from Into the Woods)
Somebody, need me too much,
Somebody, know me too well,
Somebody, pull me up short
And put me through hell
And give me support
For being alive,
Make me alive.
Make me confused,
Mock me with praise,
Let me be used,
Vary my days.
But alone is alone, not alive.
Somebody, crowd me with love,
Somebody, force me to care,
Somebody, make me come through,
I'll always be there,
As frightened as you,
To help us survive
Being alive,
Being alive,
Being alive!
I tried to watch NBC's live Sound of Music. I couldn't get through it. Kelly Clarkson just can't act, and the show is more than just singing Do-Re-Mi. The kids were pretty blah. Audra MacDonald as Mother Superior was the only thing I liked. I turned it off and started listening to Broadway show albums, particularly Company. For a minute, I imagined Jeremy Renner singing Being Alive. He's got the range, and he's said he wants to do a musical someday. I bet he'd be great as Bobby!
