Well, until today. A United 777 took off from Denver International Airport this afternoon, and an engine exploded. Debris fell in a Broomfield neighborhood about a mile east from my high school! Incredibly, no one on the ground was injured, and the plane made a safe emergency landing back at DIA.
So weird to see my former hometown on the national news!
The luckiest family in Broomfield. This engine cover missed their house by inches!
Friends who still live in Broomfield have told me they heard a "boom" and then the airplane pieces falling to the ground. It's a miracle no one was hurt. It would have been a major catastrophe if the plane had actually crashed. It had a full load of fuel because it was bound for Hawaii, and 231 passengers with 10 crew. *shudders*
